Josse and Gaston Bernheim-Jeune were the first to appreciate and promote Matisse's work. From 1909 till 1926 they had Henri Matisse under contract. After 1926 they continued to keep a privileged relationship with the artist, regularly buying his paintings. They also exhibited and photographed many paintings and drawings that they did not buy themselves.

The 2 volumes of the Matisse book are indivisible. They include contracts of the gallery with Henri Matisse, letters, invitations, catalogues, and selections of catalogues of 67 personal or group exhibitions at Bernheim-Jeune, where his work was exhibited. The first exhibition took place in 1907.

The 2 volumes records 798 works that are known to the Bernheim-Jeune gallery. Most of the photographs are black and white glass plates dating from the early XXth century. That's why only 8 color plates are reproduced. Most of Matisse's work is printed on glossy paper. Volume I and Volume II are each composed of more than 700 pages. Format: 23X33 cm. Tome I et Tome II

MM. Josse et Gaston Bernheim furent les premiers à découvrir, apprécier et à promouvoir l'oeuvre d'Henri Matisse. Ils eurent sous contrat Henri Matisse de 1909 à 1926. Après 1926 ils continuèrent à entretenir des relations privilégiées avec cet artiste, lui achetant directement des oeuvres, l'exposant et photographiant une grande partie de ses tableau et de ses dessins même lorsqu'ils ne les achetaient pas.

Cet ouvrage qui comprend deux tomes indissociables, reproduit notamment les contrats entre Henri Matisse et MM. Bernheim-Jeune, quelques lettres, des cartes d'invitation, des catalogues ou des extraits de catalogues des 67 expositions personnelles ou de groupe où figurènt des oeuvres d'Henri Matisse chez Bernheim-Jeune, la première exposition ayant eu lieu en 1907.

Cet ouvrage comprend également 798 oeuvres répertoriées avec leur référence chez Bernheim-Jeune. La plupart de ces photographies proviennent des clichés en verre datant de la création de l'oeuvre: ce qui explique que cet ouvrage ne comprenne que 8 reproductions de tableaux en couleurs. Une grande partie des oeuvres sont reproduites en grand format. Le Tome I et le Tome II comprenant chacun plus de 700 pages.
